In the flesh: Kim Kardashian on her fragrance and why her hair always looks so good

“How would you like to have lunch with Kim Kardashian?” asks beauty editor Lesa Hannah.
It’s only a few days into my internship and I’ve already been presented with the chance to meet my celeb body crush.
Before Kim came along, I worshipped at the altar of J.Lo, so, as you can tell, the big-butt-flat-tum combo is what I dream of—I’m a serial lunger.
She’s in town to promote her new fragrance but, truth be told, I’m more interested in seeing her in the flesh. When she finally enters the room at One Restaurant at the Hazelton, I see that, yes, she’s hot.
Dressed in a tight Elise Øverland dress and stunning LAMB by Gwen Stefani heels, I have to admit her butt looks even better in real life—easily rivalling J.Lo’s.
Her makeup is traditional Kim K style: nude lips, sun-kissed bronze cheeks and a sultry but softer version of her traditional smoky eye.
I’m also in love with her long, dark, healthy-looking hair, but have to wonder whether it’s really all hers. To my surprise, she admits to not being able to do her hair herself. “I never style my hair, if it’s in a ponytail you know I’ve done it,” she says.
I can no longer ignore the obvious; I have to ask how she stays looking so good. She swears by the pills that she and her sister endorse (QuickTrim, a diet system that supposedly helps you lose weight) and also emphasizes the importance of diet and exercise. I mentally block the entire cheesecake I consumed last week.
And the scent? Much to my surprise, it’s actually quite lovely, and very similar to the original Michael Kors. The floral blend consists of tuberose, jasmine and gardenia, notes that Kardashian says remind her of her family members.
“I wanted a sexy and feminine scent that’s still fresh, light and floral. I didn’t want it to smell like candy,” she explains. It’s a project that has been in the works for two years, and she is proud to publicize the fact that she was involved in the entire process. “I think the fragrance really appeals to different women. My mom and my sisters love it, so anyone of any age can wear it.”

5 things we love from Dace’s spring collection
One of my all-time favourite Vancouver labels (and arguably the city’s most nationally- and internationally-known) is Dace (dace.ca). Knowing my interns would love designer Dace Moore and marketing and account manager Adele Tetangco as much as I do, we visited the company’s showroom to preview the fall collection. I like Moore’s use of prints, as well as the beautiful lace paneling in many of the tops and dresses. While I was there, I couldn’t resist perusing the racks of spring and summer goodies. Here are my top picks, all available now online.
Coco pants, $150. Dace, who was wearing these when we visited, paired these with flat, distressed boots for a cool, everyday look. I also love them with towering shoes. High-waisted pants + high heels = the illusion of legs for miles!

In fact, I see Filipino online stores selling shearling-lined boots, snow boots, leather boots and suede boots to Filipina fashionistas. I can imagine how toasted I would feel if I wear boots in the Philippine tropical weather. The average yearly weather in the Philippines is 80 degrees F, and it does not dip down below the 60's. Most of the time, it's scorching and searing, not to mention humid. So, I cannot imaging how my fellow Filipinas feel comfortable being shod in footwear intended for subarctic and tundra climates, in the tropical Philippine climate. Also, wearing long-sleeved hoodies are labeled modish by Filipinos. The worst thing is, these hoodies are either made of fleece or velvet. They also do layering because my countrymen believe that putting piles of clothes over another is so chichi.
In my own honest opinion, unless a Filipino is a rockstar or a celebrity, it's perfectly fine to wear boots. But if they are not, I think it's definitely tacky...or worst. WACKY. No matter how much they say if somebody can pull it off in the hot, humid Philippine weather, that's alright. But donning boots in the Philippines is just absolutely off. It's similar to wearing flipflops on slushy snow in the dead of winter.
Well then, all I could say Filipino fashionphiles just want to look good the American way. But even then, if the Filipinos got American fashion all wrong, the good thing is, the American fashion statement is definitely neither drab nor sloppy.

THE AMERICAN FASHION STATEMENT ACCORDING TO FILIPINOS
Ever wonder what is the American fashion statement to the world? Or more specifically to the inhabitants of the 3rd world-Philippines? Europeans think Americans are sloppy when it comes to fashion. Some think the American style of dressing is too casual. Maybe because Europeans view denim jeans originating from the U.S.A., (Americans staple of casual attire) to be something as never high fashion. If you were to ask a European to picture an American, it would look something like this: a chubby gal with unkempt hair, or hidden behind a baseball cap, a printed T-shirt, faded jeans, sneakers and a fanny pack. Ugly, isn't it?
However, the sloppy image is admissible. Some Americans have lost the "chic part" of casual chic. There was a time in the past, when Americans who innovated dressing up by putting off the restrictions of girdles, took pride in stylish dressing. Over the years, the Americans adopted their own casual and comfort mindset to attire. Pajamas have become a "daytime outside wear" and Juicy Couture brought tracksuits as casual daywear. Shearling-lined Uggs boots are must-haves among women in warm and sunny Southern California. Also, extremely gaudy jewelry and bling sprawled on fashion and celebrity magazines have made these accessories as fashion statements. To the fashion police, these are big fashion-don'ts.
To Filipinos, American fashion is not dowdy, but a combination of "ghetto" and "San Francisco." I once chortled when I read about a blog post written by a Filipino-American balikbayan boarding a plane to Manila. He said Filipinos were wearing leather and shearling-lined boots with the flashy bling-bling adorning their necks, ears, wrists and fingers. He thought Filipinos have a way to announce to their countrymen that they hail from the States (Filipino slang for the U.S.A.), and that their possessions, including the accoutrement on their body are State-side , meaning from the "U.S.A." In the Philippines, people have the notion that when your stuff are from the USA, it means they are all "better " than the ones we have in our own poor country. The author thinks it's funny that the American fashion statement to the Filipinos is "ghetto fabulous."
Most Filipinos derive their fashion taste from the West, especially from the Americans. What they see on MTV bring them a concept of what are the latest stylish trends. And because most American TV fare are generally showing Americans in boots, bling, sneakers, tracksuits and hoodies---Filipinos perceive these as "cool" American fashion. Aside from MTV, there are a number of TV shows that convey the images of fashionable Americans such as Sex and the City, and Gossip Girl.
However, Filipinos don't get it---they don't get the "sense" of American fashion. The desire to be like the Americans in their skincolor, lingo and style, the Filipinos love to imitate. To look like white, speak like the Yanks, and dress up like the American, Filipinos embraced everything American even if they do not make sense in their society, culture and environment.

Bushra Aftab's dinner party at Chez Nur organization was a melange of good food and splendor, with many fashion hotties at the occasion. Many celebrities were seen there including actors, fashion designers and models including Iffat Rahim Omer and Mehreen Syed.
