7:10pm and 30 seconds: Catch a glimpse of my obnoxiously peeling blue nail polish as I'm finishing my lips. Alarm! Alarm! The day got away from me, and now, in the 11th hour, I remember I forgot to get a mani. I have 10 minutes before my husband and I leave for a first date with another couple. Ah! My husband can rely on his solid handshake and eye contact to make a good first impression, but for a woman, nails are the x-factor that say it all. Chipped nails don't exactly scream polished, put-together or stylish. My options are slim. We're all on the quest for enlightenment. My "aha" moments are not always as profound as Oprah's, but they do come. I cheated. The first day I felt a tinge of guilt. However, I'm so smitten, I'm going public with my new love affair and revealing my latest find to all of you -- Whoogas!

Whoogas are the new Uggs. I never thought I'd find a boot I'd be more attached to than my comfy Uggs. Then again, I never thought I'd go blonde.

"Allah's Tailors" gaining profile in Turkey

STANBUL (Reuters Life!) – Along Istanbul's busy Eminonu waterfront women swathed in dark coats and scarves knotted once under the chin jostle past others clad in vivid colors and head coverings carefully sculpted around the face.

Two decades ago such a polished, pious look scarcely existed in Turkey. But today it has the highest profile exponents in First Lady Hayrunnisa Gul and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's wife Emine, and the brands behind it plan ambitious expansion.

The headscarf remains one of Turkey's most divisive issues. Everything from the way it is tied and accessorized, to the poise and demeanor of the wearer, is laden with meaning in this majority Muslim but officially secular country of 74 million.

From a simple headcovering, stigmatized in the early days of the Turkish Republic as backward and rural, it has become, in the last decades, a carefully crafted garment and highly marketable commodity, embodying the challenge of a new class of conservative Muslims to Turkey's secularist elites.

"It was hard to find anything chic for the covered women 10 years ago, but fashion for pious women has made huge progress in the last 6-7 years," said Alpaslan Akman, an executive in charge of production and marketing at Muslim fashion brand Armine.

Armine is known for its high-impact campaigns. Huge posters have hung in the heart of Istanbul's bar and nightclub district -- the serene models contrasting with the commotion below.

The brand teams colorful scarves with figure-skimming coats, pert collars, big buttons and ruffled sleeves.

A coat typically sells for around 200 Turkish lira ($143.2), while scarves retail for around 50 lira.

"We are much luckier than previous generations, we have more designs and colors of scarves to choose from," said 30-year-old Filiz Albayrak, a sales assistant in an Istanbul scarf shop.

Around 69 percent of Turkish women cover their heads in some form, with 16 percent using the more concealing and self-consciously stylish "turban" style scarf, which tightly covers the hair and neck, according to a 2007 study.

Getting it to sit right takes much time and effort, and usually requires an under bonnet to first provide a stiff base.

GROWING CONFIDENCE

Turkey's first lady, who wears a turban, co-hosted Republic Day celebrations with her husband for the first time last month, in a sign of confidence among the pious establishment.

Encountering Hayrunissa Gul in her headscarf in the Presidential Palace was too much for the staunchly secularist military however, who refused to show up.

Mustafa Karaduman, founder of Islamic fashion house Tekbir in 1982 and nicknamed "Allah's Tailor" in the Turkish media, sees the changes in society and is hopeful of further growth.

"Our work was quite amateur in the first decade. Then in 1992 we organized the very first headscarf fashion show, which brought us global attention. Now Islamic style clothes are on the agenda everywhere around the world," he said.

He plans to add to his 90 stores in Turkey and 10 abroad. Armine, like Tekbir also has ambitious expansion plans.

"We are very aggressive in terms of targets...I'll say we are successful when the day comes that people think 'Who's Armani? It must be fake Armine,'" joked Akman.

Turkish daily Milliyet estimated the Islamic clothing market to be worth $2.9 billion.

Despite its presence on the streets, women students and civil servants are banned from wearing the scarf in the institutions of the secular state, a rule the governing AK Party, led by conservative Muslims, has pledged to end.

The secular establishment fears any change to the ban could see uncovered women feel pressure to cover their heads.

An attempt by the AK Party to remove the ban three years ago was blocked by the Constitutional Court and nearly saw the party closed down for anti-secular activities.

Continued discussions over the headscarf mirror Turkey's socio-economic development and the struggle over the defining line between the country's political and religious characters.

Rapid economic growth has given many people more income to spend on themselves, while rising political consciousness among an ascendant class of pious Muslims has led to highly visible veiling as they stake a claim in society.

Religion became more prominent in society after a 1980 military coup, and was tolerated as a foil to leftist ideologies. Young urban women started wearing home-made baggy coats and large scarves as a political statement, according to Ozlem Sandikci, assistant professor of marketing at Ankara's Bilkent university.

Garments gradually became more shapely and colorful, as pious women wanted to be seen and acknowledged, she said.

"Turkey already had the textile know-how. So as women started to cover it is obvious that business would emerge and start to supply them. These small companies began to grow and have become increasingly influential players," she said.

Today the most conservative Muslims frown on the Islamic fashion industry's commodification of the headscarf, while staunch secularists say the clothes are ostentatious and betray little of the modesty that wearing a headscarf is supposed to express.

"Modesty is a requirement but it is not the only requirement," Sandikci said. "Women are also supposed to demonstrate a pleasant look so as to act as a role model, and a positive example of Islam."

No Bombs, Only Bombshells, Plus a $2 Million Bra, at the Victoria's Secret Show

New York – It's the highly coveted invitation that few people receive, but everyone wants: the taping of the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show. Held in the Lexington Armory in New York on Wednesday night, Nov. 10, it was bombs and bombshells in the building, and a whole lot of voyeurs in between.

Well, maybe not literally bombs - there were dogs sniffing purses for explosives to prevent that - but military memorabilia in glass cases lined the hallway as guests entered the custom built space that rivaled a Paris couture show in scale.

Plush, red padded stadium-style seating looked down on a very glittery gold runway, with seats towering some 30 feet up. Though the main attraction was 30 of the most beautiful women in the world clad in Victoria's Secret underwear and the show's signature angel wings, if you forgot your opera glasses that night or weren't sitting in the VIP sections, you were more likely to get an up-close-and-personal look at the back of the heads of business men in suits, who, not surprisingly, made up a good majority of the audience.

But if the custom bra and panty sets were hard to see, there were other more visible accoutrement on display, such as the aforementioned wings, as well as sporty-themed costumes and cowgirl-inspired get-ups. It was Halloween and "sexy" costumes-in-a-bag all over again on the runway. And glitter, lots and lots of it. A hundred pounds, to be exact, along with 30 bottles of Victoria's Secret "Shimmer Mist" and 40 cans of hairspray. No one said being beautiful was easy, or natural.

Despite the pounds of glitter, makeup artist Tom Pechaux said the look was inspired by the California girl, one of the most natural female archetypes around.

"This season we are playing with bronzer," he said as he applied makeup to Alessandra Ambrosio some eight hours before showtime. "It's more healthy, it's more dewy, more glow-y."

Adding to the spectacle, and cementing the "California Girls" theme, were live performances by Katy Perry and Akon. They played to a far more subdued audience than the usual screaming arena crowds they're likely used to, which might explain the canned applause that followed their respective performances. However, Vin Diesel put in a good show of support as he cheered them on, fist-pumping and clapping wildly from his front row seat.

The big ticket star of the night, however, was the $2 million "Bombshell Fantasy Bra" worn by Adriana Lima, covered with 60 carats of diamonds and 82 carats of sapphires and topaz stones with a pattern meant to evoke a swirling constellation, said Sylvia Damiani, vice president of Damiani, the jeweler who created the bra. And who might be lining up to buy this VIP bra?

"You know, it's a very special piece, and the kind of person that would eventually buy it is not that easy to find," said Damiani before the show. "I was thinking that the right person for it would be like a singer, a stage person. I see it more as a kind of piece that is something that you wear when you are a performer. Like Lady Gaga, or Katy Perry!"

For the Victoria's Secret models walking in the show, it was as much about performance as it was about modeling clothes - or lack thereof - on the runway. For some, that meant even more added pressure.

Chanel Iman, who closed the show in an elaborate, 30 pound bubble-wing ensemble, said that this show was definitely a different experience from her usual jobs during fashion week.

"It's a little bit stressful, just because you want to be amazing, and you want to just feel good in lingerie," she said. "It takes a lot to walk in front of a lot of people."

And even these top models had to follow strict diet and exercise routines in the days leading up to the show, like Behati Prinsloo.

"I saw my trainer every day for the last week just to do different things. I did Pilates, I did some boxing, and just drank loads of water, kept healthy, and slept."

But once the show was done, she had some big plans: "I'm going to have a huge steak, and a chocolate mousse cake. Devour everything that I want, and not work out for about two weeks!"

The televised version of the show airs on Tuesday, Nov. 30, on CBS.

LONDON – Kate Middleton's style is natural, unforced and unpretentious. She never seems to be trying too hard or worried about currying favor with the glittery world of fashion.

That's going to help — a lot — when the naturally beautiful young woman blessed with poise, dimples, long legs and perfect posture marries Prince William next year.

Middleton is already one of the most photographed women in Britain — and with Tuesday's engagement announcement, she immediately leaps to the top of the fashion world. That position was once occupied by Princess Diana, William's mother, who was killed in a 1997 car crash in Paris.

Like Diana, whose graceful style was widely imitated until her shockingly early death, Middleton's choices will be scrutinized by fashion editors worldwide and copied by retailers in the world's fashion capitals.

Middleton, 28, already has a distinctive look, one that emphasizes her long brown hair, pale skin and charismatic smile. She favors white and black over splashes of color and has shied away from London's radical street fashion in favor of mainstream looks.

"She has a feminine streak, and she dresses very much for herself, she's not a slaving fashionista," said Hilary Alexander, fashion director of The Telegraph newspaper. "She's never obvious. But there will be massive pressure on her now. I don't think we've had a royal wedding on this scale for nearly 30 years."

Middleton wears many classic outfits, and favors full length, solid-colored coats. Her look has not changed dramatically season to season or from year to year.

There are already fashion blogs devoted to Middleton and her fashion choices. She has not formed any strong allegiances to specific designers yet, though she does favor the work of Daniella Issa Helayel, among others.

Middleton could have been conjured up by central casting: She looks right in almost any setting, from a formal evening gown (plunging neckline, fuchsia) to jeans and a sweater. She has been photographed on a boat, at polo matches, graduations and shooting weekends — with only the occasional misstep.

She's only had two unfortunate outfits so far: The sheer dress she wore over black lingerie at a charity fashion show in 2002 — before the royal romance began — and a yellow, turquoise and pink rollerblading outfit at a charity event.

Middleton took a bad spill in the disco outfit and was photographed in a rather undignified position. Still, she was able to laugh it off, winning the day with her smile and sense of fun.

Despite the fact that her parents are self-made millionaires, she does not dress like a wealthy woman, often shopping at mid-level stores on British main streets. When she was photographed wearing a low-priced dress from Topshop on her 25th birthday, the item became an overnight national sensation, selling out in 24 hours.

In recent months, she has shifted more toward custom-made clothes, and she will undoubtedly adopt a more showcasy style once she formally joins the royal family.

The biggest fashion decision Middleton faces right now is what wedding dress she will choose.

Deborah Joseph, editor of Brides Magazine, said Middleton will face substantial pressure to choose an English designer, while Alexander said she expects the princess-to-be to come up with a surprising choice for a wedding dress.

"It's a British royal wedding, there's no need to look abroad," said Joseph. "Obviously there will be lots of speculation on the designer now, it depends which route Kate takes. She may give a nod to Princess Diana, and use one of her designers, like Bruce Oldfield or Amanda Wakeley, or she may make a statement of her own."

Joseph said Middleton's decision could define bridal wear for the next decade, much as Diana's choice in 1981 became the most-copied wedding dress in history.

One easy bet, however: Middleton is likely to use much softer fabric, like tulle or organza, than the stiff taffeta Diana used.

Joseph said Middleton faces another wedding style decision — what to do with her distinctive long brown hair. Should it be completely swept-up — or not?

"I've never seen her with her hair completely up, and it's more common now for brides to wear their hair down," Joseph said. "Most brides don't want to look like a completely different person, you want to look like a better version of yourself."

Of course, the person expected to fill Diana's fashion shoes won't be in the "most brides" category.

I always find the business of tipping at a salon or spa an uncomfortable process, since I'm never sure of "tipping etiquette." Who should I tip and how much. Figuring I wasn't the only one who experienced "tipping anxiety", I decided to take the matter to some pros and asked friends who own or work at spas or salons to answer some of my questions about tipping. (Thanks for your help guys and gals.) Below you can find the list of questions I asked, and the answers I put together from both their comments and my own experience. As an aside, salons with a "no tipping policy" do exist. Click on the link for a list.

What is a normal tip for services?

A tip should typically fall within the 15% to 20% range. (This is before tax is added.)

Are there circumstances when you should tip more than 15% to 20%?

If the service provider either did something out of the ordinary or did something that took a great deal of time (such as major make-overs, color correction, etc.) you might want to consider leaving a larger tip.

Who else should you tip other than the person who performs the service?

At a salon, you should tip the person who shampoos your hair ($5) and the person who blow dries your hair other than the stylist ($10). It is not necessary to tip the receptionist or someone who brings you a drink.

Should I use an envelope to put the tip in or is it okay to give the service provider the cash without the envelope?

If the spa or salon provides envelopes for tips at the front desk, it is customary to use them.

Should I put my name on the envelope so that the service provider knows the tip is from me?

You should write both your name and the name of the person for whom the tip is intended on the envelope. Don't write the amount of money you put inside the envelope on the envelope itself.

Should I leave the tip at the front desk or give it directly to the service provider? If I leave it at the front desk, how do I know the service provider has actually received the tip?

You can leave the tip in an envelope at the front desk or give it to the person who provided the service, whatever makes you more comfortable. Don't worry about leaving it at the front desk. It will make it to the appropriate person.

If my service provider is the owner of the salon or spa, should I tip him or her?

Although tipping the owner is not "required," a tip is customarily given -- even if its a token. However, I have seen situations where the salon owner will not accept tips under any circumstances. If I plan to see the salon or spa owner, I always ask the receptionist what custom is for tipping him or her when booking my first appointment.

How much should I tip if I don't like the service(s) provided?

If you are unhappy with the service, first talk to the person who performed it. If you don't receive a satisfactory answer, speak to the manager and/or owner (depending upon the particular salon or spa involved). Most reputable places will stand behind their work and try to make the client happy. In these instances you have to use your own judgment. My rule of thumb is to leave some sort of a tip (nothing too insulting) if I'm even considering returning. You may want to ask for guidance from the manager/owner if its gotten to that point. Even if you decide not to tip the service provider, you should tip people like the shampoo person.

At holiday time, should I give my service providers a holiday gift?

To some extent it depends upon your relationship with the service provider, but a gift is always appreciated. An extra envelope with cash is an option and often the preferred one. However, depending upon the person a more personal gift may be well received. For instance, I often give wine to people who I know enjoy it. Just think about his or her likes and dislikes when selecting a gift.

One More Point

Remember, both the people who were so generous with their advice as well as my own experience is primarily "Manhattan centric." Tipping customs may differ in different regions of the country and parts of the world. When in doubt, ask the receptionist -- he or she will almost always help you out with an honest answer.

What you should do to prevent wrinkles around the eyes?

Don’t forget to cleanse the skin around the eyes in the morning with special eye lotions or cleansing milk.
Apply an eye cream with light pats but don’t stretch the skin. Apply them carefully starting at the outer corner of the eyes to the inner corners.
At night remove the makeup carefully. Apply cleansing milk and remove the mascara firstly and when you have removed the makeup completely apply an eye cream again.

“How would you like to have lunch with Kim Kardashian?” asks beauty editor Lesa Hannah.

It’s only a few days into my internship and I’ve already been presented with the chance to meet my celeb body crush.

Before Kim came along, I worshipped at the altar of J.Lo, so, as you can tell, the big-butt-flat-tum combo is what I dream of—I’m a serial lunger.

She’s in town to promote her new fragrance but, truth be told, I’m more interested in seeing her in the flesh. When she finally enters the room at One Restaurant at the Hazelton, I see that, yes, she’s hot.

Dressed in a tight Elise Øverland dress and stunning LAMB by Gwen Stefani heels, I have to admit her butt looks even better in real life—easily rivalling J.Lo’s.

Her makeup is traditional Kim K style: nude lips, sun-kissed bronze cheeks and a sultry but softer version of her traditional smoky eye.

I’m also in love with her long, dark, healthy-looking hair, but have to wonder whether it’s really all hers. To my surprise, she admits to not being able to do her hair herself. “I never style my hair, if it’s in a ponytail you know I’ve done it,” she says.

I can no longer ignore the obvious; I have to ask how she stays looking so good. She swears by the pills that she and her sister endorse (QuickTrim, a diet system that supposedly helps you lose weight) and also emphasizes the importance of diet and exercise. I mentally block the entire cheesecake I consumed last week.

And the scent? Much to my surprise, it’s actually quite lovely, and very similar to the original Michael Kors. The floral blend consists of tuberose, jasmine and gardenia, notes that Kardashian says remind her of her family members.

“I wanted a sexy and feminine scent that’s still fresh, light and floral. I didn’t want it to smell like candy,” she explains. It’s a project that has been in the works for two years, and she is proud to publicize the fact that she was involved in the entire process. “I think the fragrance really appeals to different women. My mom and my sisters love it, so anyone of any age can wear it.”

Do remember a couple of things. Apply under eye concealer right after you have moisturized your face but before you put on your foundation. And for constant shadows under the eyes, try to get more sleep. Doctors say that the vast majority of the circles people develop under their eyes are from lack of sleep. If your circles are a result of a sinus problem or other medical condition, don't just conceal and ignore them.

For under eye puffiness, use a highlighter or your light foundation underneath your eyes to refract light and make it look as if your "under eye" area is even with your face; again, an optical illusion.

Some women like to dye their eyelashes so they don't have to wear mascara much of the time. It is usually a safe procedure, especially with the vegetable dyes now on the market. But please let a professional do it. You don't want to take a chance on damaging your eyes.

In fact, I see Filipino online stores selling shearling-lined boots, snow boots, leather boots and suede boots to Filipina fashionistas. I can imagine how toasted I would feel if I wear boots in the Philippine tropical weather. The average yearly weather in the Philippines is 80 degrees F, and it does not dip down below the 60's. Most of the time, it's scorching and searing, not to mention humid. So, I cannot imaging how my fellow Filipinas feel comfortable being shod in footwear intended for subarctic and tundra climates, in the tropical Philippine climate. Also, wearing long-sleeved hoodies are labeled modish by Filipinos. The worst thing is, these hoodies are either made of fleece or velvet. They also do layering because my countrymen believe that putting piles of clothes over another is so chichi.

In my own honest opinion, unless a Filipino is a rockstar or a celebrity, it's perfectly fine to wear boots. But if they are not, I think it's definitely tacky...or worst. WACKY. No matter how much they say if somebody can pull it off in the hot, humid Philippine weather, that's alright. But donning boots in the Philippines is just absolutely off. It's similar to wearing flipflops on slushy snow in the dead of winter.

Well then, all I could say Filipino fashionphiles just want to look good the American way. But even then, if the Filipinos got American fashion all wrong, the good thing is, the American fashion statement is definitely neither drab nor sloppy.

Ever wonder what is the American fashion statement to the world? Or more specifically to the inhabitants of the 3rd world-Philippines? Europeans think Americans are sloppy when it comes to fashion. Some think the American style of dressing is too casual. Maybe because Europeans view denim jeans originating from the U.S.A., (Americans staple of casual attire) to be something as never high fashion. If you were to ask a European to picture an American, it would look something like this: a chubby gal with unkempt hair, or hidden behind a baseball cap, a printed T-shirt, faded jeans, sneakers and a fanny pack. Ugly, isn't it?

I disagree with the Europeans. They probably had captured this image through the American tourists they see around. Most American urbanites know how to dress well. The world's fashion capital is located right here in the American mainland---New York City, also known as the "greatest city in the world." New York City is the progenitor of fashion and style, and the home of the finest fashion institutes in the world. American's true sartorial image is not sloppiness but "ease, and simplicity." With its national psyche of freedom and comfort, Americans prefer to garb themselves with something stylish, yet easy to wear, and simple. Though most people who live in the suburbs are either frumpy or slapdash because they are in their vehicles most of the time to go to pick up their kids, do groceries or go to the gym. Sometimes, living in suburbia could make you more relaxed and thus translates to the way you dress up.

However, the sloppy image is admissible. Some Americans have lost the "chic part" of casual chic. There was a time in the past, when Americans who innovated dressing up by putting off the restrictions of girdles, took pride in stylish dressing. Over the years, the Americans adopted their own casual and comfort mindset to attire. Pajamas have become a "daytime outside wear" and Juicy Couture brought tracksuits as casual daywear. Shearling-lined Uggs boots are must-haves among women in warm and sunny Southern California. Also, extremely gaudy jewelry and bling sprawled on fashion and celebrity magazines have made these accessories as fashion statements. To the fashion police, these are big fashion-don'ts.

To Filipinos, American fashion is not dowdy, but a combination of "ghetto" and "San Francisco." I once chortled when I read about a blog post written by a Filipino-American balikbayan boarding a plane to Manila. He said Filipinos were wearing leather and shearling-lined boots with the flashy bling-bling adorning their necks, ears, wrists and fingers. He thought Filipinos have a way to announce to their countrymen that they hail from the States (Filipino slang for the U.S.A.), and that their possessions, including the accoutrement on their body are State-side , meaning from the "U.S.A." In the Philippines, people have the notion that when your stuff are from the USA, it means they are all "better " than the ones we have in our own poor country. The author thinks it's funny that the American fashion statement to the Filipinos is "ghetto fabulous."

Most Filipinos derive their fashion taste from the West, especially from the Americans. What they see on MTV bring them a concept of what are the latest stylish trends. And because most American TV fare are generally showing Americans in boots, bling, sneakers, tracksuits and hoodies---Filipinos perceive these as "cool" American fashion. Aside from MTV, there are a number of TV shows that convey the images of fashionable Americans such as Sex and the City, and Gossip Girl.

However, Filipinos don't get it---they don't get the "sense" of American fashion. The desire to be like the Americans in their skincolor, lingo and style, the Filipinos love to imitate. To look like white, speak like the Yanks, and dress up like the American, Filipinos embraced everything American even if they do not make sense in their society, culture and environment.

Fragrances are classed—and priced—by their alcohol content, with the least expensive being eau de toilettes and eau de colognes containing between 3% and 8% fragrance with the other 92-97% of the content being made up of alcohol, water and color. Eau de parfum contains actual perfume oils of 8-15%. You pay more for perfume because it is stronger at application and lasts longer than eau de toilette. Perfume (or “parfum”) contains somewhere between 15% and 30% of perfume oils and lasts longer than other scent types—typically around six hours. Always try to take a sample of perfume home to try for a week or two and make sure it is the right fragrance and strength for you before buying.

Fragrance Blending Families

Fragrances may be floral, spicy, woody, herbal, musky, powdery (also called “chypre”) or “aqueous” a recent designation for aromatherapy scents that are based more on a concept of a “watery” smell than an actual scent. The recent rediscovery of herbal and floral scents combined with recent technology for scent capture has created new markets for subtle extracts—“headspace” scents extracted through the use of gas chromatography, creating entirely new classes of perfumes. That we are influenced by naturally-emitted scents called pheromones, so subtle and yet so powerful that we can be drawn to or repelled by people for reasons we don’t even understand. DAY FIVE LFW: Flying Lizards and Barking Dogs London Fashion Week

Despite Tuesday beginning with transport problems thwarting our every attempt to get to a fashion show at all, we would not be deterred! Having discovered that both Mary Katrantzou and Cooperative Designs had started and finished as scheduled (just our luck!) we sped over to Covent Garden to catch Josh Goot at the Flower Cellars. Five stars for a gorgeous venue, all echoes and atmosphere, and top marks for the clothes, all serene minimalism. Josh seemed to have taken cues from Two Face, or more likely Ying and Yang with his two-tone collection – one side dark, one light. It was essentially monochromatic but instead of white we had barely pink and almost mint. Skinny tailoring featured contour lines almost carved out of the fabric and hair was slicked back to create a smooth, linear effect. It wouldn’t be a/w09 if Josh didn’t include a print and he didn’t disappoint with his offering, a nebular cluster of colours.

From pared down chic to tongue in cheek at Avsh Alom Gur, who wasn’t about to beat around the bush. He knows there’s economic hardship and he’s rolling with it and against it. A soundtrack littered with money themed tunes with favourites such as the Flying Lizards ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’ accompanied a beautiful gown emblazoned with the words ‘credit crunch’. These may be hard times but Av's collection steers towards haute couture. Inspired by a Parisian ball, luxury abounds with voluminous gowns, stunning dancing girl prints and a structured skirt could almost have been ripped from renaissance chair. The collection had been without it’s credit crunch theme until last Friday when it became a sudden addition – though we like to see his gorgeous clothes, it isn’t fashion week without Avsh Alom’s unique brand of humour.

Also a last minute addition to the catwalk was Blow’s Same Generation show, a replacement for the much-missed Spijkers en Spijkers who had to pull out at the last minute. Only an outfit like Blow PR with their unstinting commitment to upcoming talent, could turn this around in just a few days. We rallied our spirits and were greatly entertained by three fresh talents in a show that felt truly what London should be about: guerilla showcases and creative innovation entertaining the crowds. Gemma Slack was first up with a series of gothic garments inspired by religious crusades and medieval armour. There is a menacing overtone to her collection: mouth ‘bits’ brought back memories of Hannibal Lector and his chilling mask and a neoprene padded jacket looked like segments of vertebrae, albeit fashioned in a beautiful way. Glossy black was intermixed with a smouldering smoke print, echoing the billowing incense burning in a church thurible. Komakino also stuck to black with their menswear offering. Part bondage, part urban, there are mesh hoodies featured alongside leather biker jackets with S+M straps. What sets Komakino apart is the utilitarian detailing such as a rucksack with a hood attached and bags attached to garments. Craig Lawrence headed away from this gothic sensibility and showed a zany collection that was all about colour and movement. Inspired by sweets and cocktails, the opening dress seemed to have springs attached to the hem as it bounced down the catwalk. As ever, the crazier the collection, the more input from the audience; boy did they go wild.

Emma Bell seemed to have taken this into consideration with her brilliantly bonkers collection at the Fashion Scout. London club celeb Scottee entered centre stage to warble, or rather croak, ‘How Much is That Doggie in The Window’ in a dog costume and sparkling gold heels, accompanied by a dapper violinist. Fashion theatrics, impossible not to love ‘em. This was fun, experimental fashion with a Perspex gingerbread man waistcoat opening the show. The collection stemmed from Emma's experience seeing cruelty to dogs in East Asian cultures, so a canine theme dominated proceedings; wolf printed yellow jeans and an orange sequin dress with two kissing pups are just two examples (not to mention the slideshow of pets that preceded any catwalk action). Not all of what we saw was dedicated to man’s best friend, as cute as they are. Yellow quilted PVC trousers were like a high fashion option for trawler fishermen and a peeled banana print livened up a sparkly silver number. A neon knit houndstooth (note the hound in houndstooth!) dress paved the way for the three stars of the show: two fame hungry West Highland terriers that almost upstaged a certain Jodie Harsh.

Aside from feeling a little disappointed that we couldn’t take the live dogs home, we took comfort in the fact we would remember Emma’s barking show for a long time to come. What a way to end the day.

DAY FOUR LFW: We Like MondaysLondon Fashion Week

Sometimes Monday mornings can feel like a drag, but not this particular Monday. It was the opening of Hats: an Anthology by Stephen Jones at the V&A and so instead of a Monday morning scowl we made our way to the museum with a quickened step, after all who better than Mr. Jones to compile such a comprehensive collection of headgear.

The exhibition features a variety of Stephen's own designs amongst offerings from other milliners, designers and ancient examples such as an Anubis headdress from 600BC. This is no stuffy museum exhibit; it's been curated with a real artistic eye. The space itself is dimly lit, with a country garden feel - the hub of the anthology, a reenactment of millinery life and a studio in motion. A conformator (a hat measuring machine) sits pride of place and desks and floor are strewn with trimmings. Other thematic touches include a case dedicated to Cecil Beaton, floral, candy-coloured and inspired by the scene in My Fair Lady when Eliza goes to the races. Another showcases Queen Victoria’s bonnet and Prince Albert’s top hat sit side-by-side, apt when you think of the museum in which the exhibit sits.

Instead of a dry chronology of hats, spanning decades, you go from case to case according to titles such as ‘feathers’, ‘history’, ‘geometry’ and, our personal favourite, ‘London’. This means that there are hidden surprises everywhere: a top hat stenciled with bats, a ‘Wash and Go’ hat emulating shampoo bubbles frozen in time, and a jester’s cap from the 17th century, perfectly preserved.

After three intense days of catwalk shows it was nice to take a leisurely stroll in a quiet museum. Harriet’s Muse (aka Cheryl Partington and Craig Spellar) must have picked up on our aura as they presented an a/w09 show with a difference. Four chairs, four models, four hat stands and two designers dressing them, live on the catwalk. And you thought Project Catwalk was fashion reality. Before our very eyes we saw outfits take shape, models being laced into corseted dresses by Craig, whilst Cheryl artfully ripped the gauzy fabric on the hemline. This wasn’t just a narcissistic move on the designer’s part, sick of the models hogging the limelight, but rather an effort to create something out of nothing, namely surplus fabric stores in their studio and recycled trimmings. Slow paced and thoughtful, it was as if the backstage mayhem had been slowed down and put on show.

After two events without a traditional catwalk show, why break the trend. Over to the BFC we went, this time to inspect the exhibition. On the ground floor, just a hop skip and a jump away from the official catwalk are the estethica stands where, as we’ve come to expect, People Tree was holding court. Continuing with their designer collaborations, Bora Aksu has leant his unique fairytale vision to the ethical brand once again with some hand embroidered silk pieces and Eley Kishimoto have been added to the mix with a series of their instantly recognisable abstract prints.

Upstairs, in the NewGen section of the exhibition, we caught up with Krystof Strozyna who’s show we missed by a split second on Sunday. Mint green form-sculpting dresses left us even more gutted we missed the clothes on the catwalk. The upside to visiting a stand is to see nifty details up close, such as the delicate string feature that made Krystof’s clothes distinctive. His NewGen neighbour Hannah Marshall was also experimenting with surprising details such as hardened stingray skin collars and braces on her LBDs. Next season we want to see her catwalk debut!

And finally, we couldn’t go a whole day without entertaining the idea of a procession of models doing what they do best and so it was off to William Tempest at the Fashion Scout. With a headcount to rival John Rocha (and with Hermione from Harry Potter sitting front row) there was a manic atmosphere, all were hotly anticipating this designer. The clothes are sexy science fiction, with a sculpted silhouette of jutting peplums and capped shoulders that looks set to be huge in a/w09. Prints looked to the future with electric lightning adorning one dress but also to the past with an homage to Tudor times: Henry VIII and daughter Elizabeth I peered out from printed panels. Perhaps they were admiring the blinging diamond print, splashed over a silk dress and William’s own shirt.

Wasn’t it Bob Geldof who sung ‘I Don’t Like Monday’s’? He would have liked this one.

DAY THREE LFW: Prints Charming London Fashion Week

Holy moly, getting up for a 9.30am start on a Sunday feels unnatural, but luckily Betty Jackson made it worth it. Most of the onlookers looking forward to their Sunday roast may have had a rethink as Betty's collection is all about the midriff. Cropped tops are worn with snug pencil skirts and more voluminous ensembles are cinched to reveal a tiny waist, hidden under layers. It was grown-up girly; flower prints are painterly and not saccharine and a subtle snakeskin print replaced the more in-your-face offerings we saw at Eley Kishimoto (more of that later). Despite the intimidating thought of abs on show, the clothes all looked effortless; lots of tying and draping and even some artful fraying. For the third day in a row we saw summery hues for an a/w collection: icy blue and faded mustard replaced traditional autumnal tones. The smart girl touch was a handbag worn as a rucksack - Betty, mass-produce them quick, all this LFW travel with a heavy bag is leaving us lopsided!

Falguni and Shane Peacock were the first husband and wife duo of the day - showing for the second season as part of the On/Off schedule, after already establishing themselves in India. We didn't know quite what to expect but were immediately transported to Mumbai when the Slumdog Millionaire score filled the On/Off space at the Science Museum. In the place of traditional Indian sari colours, we saw deep jewel tones and pixellated prints. The Peacock’s forte is surface design, building up sleek dresses into an artist’s canvas. One number seemed to be constructed from shards of coloured glass, though this seems unlikely considering the health and safety issues, and feathers formed the shape of another. One print, the amber coloured swirls on a floor- skimming gown, was like haute couture molten lava.

And speaking of prints, and indeed husband and wife duos, Eley Kishimoto brought some serious sunshine to the BFC tents. Punters walked in to sounds of airport announcements rather than the usual dance anthem or ambient coffee shop tune. And the travel theme didn't stop there (we should have guessed from the boarding pass ticket) as the smooth voice of old blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, rang out with 'Come Fly With Me' and a series of 60s inspired ensembles appeared. The collection, entitled Jet Set Masala, gave a slight nod to The Avengers and Twiggy with monochrome checks and bold, block coloured ensembles paired with matching jaunty riding hats and tiny 'EK' emblems. You could imagine these ladies in the heyday of glamorous travel, serving you champers in first class. Please Eley Kishimoto, give British Airways staff a makeover. Goodness knows they need it. In the blink of an eye swinging 60s paisleys met exotic tiger prints in pink and turquoise and the sounds of Bollywood filled the space (hang on a minute...deja vu). The refined airhostesses had touched down in spicy India; a neat tea dress traded a round neck for an asymmetric sari collar and they were ready to explore.

For a hat trick of shows featuring glorious prints, we had the pleasure of seeing Louise Amstrup at the Fashion Scout. A graphic print of acid yellow smoke adorned her sleek collection of womenswear. Form fitting dresses were canvases for draped folds of liquid-like fabric and boy, the girl sure knows how to make a behind look good with her skinny tailored trousers. The prints didn’t quite steal the show; instead a dove grey sleeveless coat with Star Trek sleeves had that pleasure. Pens scribbled harder, shutters closed quicker and eyes grew wide; all signs of a showstopper.

From a relative newcomer to British fashion heavyweight, it was back to the BFC for Jaeger. As expected, it was a rather celeb-packed affair; names from Alexa Chung to Nicholas Hoult lined the front row. Flashbulbs blinded us, oversized handbags wielded by overzealous editors walloped us but we remained calm amongst the storm. The collection was the opposite of the atmosphere: refined and subdued. Yet more monochrome was handed to us, a stark contrast to the rainbow stylings of Eley Kishimoto, though there were a few geometric prints painted onto simple sheath dresses. Neat jackets and womanly skirt suits featured subtle tactile details like furry cuffs for comfort and sheepskin shrugs to snuggle in. The only bedazzling details were bejeweled necklines, adding some sparkle amongst the subtle tones.

There seems to be two approaches to design this week: blind the crowd with colour to erase any thoughts of the economy or offer appropriate fare, toned down and unostentatious to remind them of it. Either way, we get a variety of catwalk shows to keep our fashion week interesting.

DAY TWO LFW: From Hell, to Greenland and back.

Despite the overlap with New York fashion week (with its power brands and names) by day two of London’s creative effort it’s clear that we certainly haven’t been deserted. Our day commenced with John Rocha, in the BFC as per usual and literally brimming over with eager faces. When we call Mr Rocha reliable, it isn’t to say that he doesn’t surprise, just that he always delivers quality goods that please the punters. Of course a/w09 was no different.

The John Rocha rainbow has three star hues: black, bone and a peachy nude and each season a supporting act comes in to make a play for the starring role. Last season was deep blue and coral, this season a cheerful, fiery red that punctuates the otherwise sombre palette. The show notes declare that this season is about “austerity offset with a sense of utter happiness and a handsome recklessness” and so the procession of girls took turns in prim, black tailored coats and then hooped skirts in pale pink fit for a princess and encrusted with sparkling jewels. In fact there were a few regal touches; Anne Boleyn-like head dresses adorn scraped back hair and playing King to Anne Boleyn’s fleeting Queen was a menswear shearling coat, echoing Henry VIII and his ostentatious bearskins. Rather more likely to appeal to men of today (and hopefully the kind that wouldn’t lop their multiple wives heads off) was a crisp white classic shirt with plaid panels, in fact we’d like one for ourselves.

Channeling ideas of happiness and reckless abandon we headed over to Horace at the Vauxhall Fashion Scout. Adam Entwistle and Emma Hales, the duo behind Horace, are a rather smiley twosome but their clothes on the other hand seem to require attitude and a designer scowl. Working predominantly in black, textured layers of knit and leather drape and cocoon the body, male or female silhouette disappearing amongst tactile layers. The overall collection is quite androgynous – both guys and girls were in stomping boots, artfully unlaced and both rocked the harem pants and fluid layers. Putting aside the rock 'n' roll aspect (which is really unavoidable) this season seemed rather sinister, perhaps owing to the collection “embodying the spirit of 18th century monks”. Not sure about anyone else, but we think there’s something a bit Edgar Allen Poe about all this.

Apparently Ann-Sofie Back was in on the trend for eerie themes with her collection poetically titled “Ann-Sofie Back burns in hell”. Lovely. As we well know when Ann-Sofie Back chooses a theme she finds hidden aspects that not many would think of and boy does she run with it. This season she went wild for classic horror films and the musical themes of the Exorcist, Psycho and Ghostbusters, amongst others, echoed around the walls of the Topshop showspace as her a/w09 collection made its debut. Cross stitching on jeans and jackets mimicked Leatherface’s mask in the Texas Chainsaw massacre, zips on prom dresses make parallels with that classic teen horror stereotype. Dreamcatcher details are inspired by the Indian burial discovery in Poltergeist 2 and slash front dresses were worn by unlucky models that had obviously suffered an encounter with Freddie Krueger before taking to the catwalk. Putting the (brilliant) theme to one side, the garments had Back’s trademark asymmetric hemlines and punky details, turning what could have been a gimmick into wearable fashion. And in any case, who wouldn’t want a sweatshirt declaring ‘Boo!’ to all who you encounter.

Peter Jensen’s show took place in the same space, and a certain Mr Kanye West (or should that be KANYE WEST in honour of his love of caps) had come along to enjoy the show. Inspired by ‘Jytte’ who seems to be Aunty Jensen according to the diary entry style show notes, a Greenland resident, the show opened with yodel-like music and featured traditional kamik snow boots given the catwalk treatment (i.e. heels and a smattering of floral patterns). It looked a little bit like Heidi had grown up and got a job in fashion in the big bad city. So what of the menswear, what will we see Kanye wearing in his next video? A toss up between the floral gilet worn by a very nerdy chic male model or a metallic houndstooth jacket, ready to glint under Flashing Lights (excuse the pun).

From Hell, to Greenland, back to the 18th century and stopping over briefly in Tudor times. Forget New York, London deserves a visit if only for the mind-boggling concepts you’ll encounter day to day.
